Obituary

Candelario Candy Silos III, age 76, of North Platte, Nebraska, passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at Great Plains Health.

Candy was born December 6, 1949, in North Platte to Julio Candy II and Nicky (Serrano) Silos. There he grew up, graduating from North Platte High School in 1969. After graduating, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving until his discharge in 1975. After returning home, Candy enrolled at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln where he joined the Husker football team as a freshman. Due to a leg injury, he never progressed his football career, but remained a lifelong fan. After two years at UNL, Candy moved back to North Platte and started on the Union Pacific Railroad. He stayed on for over 20 years, working as a fireman and oiler. After retiring from the railroad, Candy worked at Weathercraft Roofing for a number of years before fully retiring in 2005. He enjoyed his retirement, while staying busy with odd jobs.

Candy will be remembered for his passion for sports. A lifelong Husker fan, he never found a sport he didn’t want to sit down and wrap his head around. In his younger years, he was quite an athlete, as shown during his stint as a Husker and when he played basketball at St. Mary’s Park. He also had a love of cars and fishing that filled his free time. A serious and quiet man, Candy was nevertheless a friend and brother to everyone he met. He never had an enemy, always willing to give the shirt off his back with no expectation of getting something in return. He was a lover of animals, owning many cats and dogs over the years. But most importantly, he was a family man. He always wanted a big family and was so proud of children, grandchildren, and great-children, as well as all of his extended family.

Those left to cherish Candy’s memory are his daughters Laura Silos and Tina (Jesse) Soto; grandchildren Alexander Silos-Denny, Jared (Montana) Silos and their daughter Eudoxia, Nate Silos, Nick Silos, Ceirra Silos, Shawn Hansen and his kids Ray and Luna; siblings, Carmen (Baldemaro) Castillo, Alex (Pam) Silos, Danny Serrano, Rose (Randy) Waymire, Gloria Arellano, David Arellano, John Arellano, Rudy Sebastion Silos, Mikey Silos, Freda Silos, Marlene Martinez, Sandra Silos, and Anthony Hornalas; cousins Carrie Guerra, Florence Chavez, and Cheryl DeWolf; Uncles, Alec Silos, Joe Thompson, Charles DeWolf; and many more friends and family.

He is preceded in death by his parents Julio Silos and Nicky Serrano; grandparents, Candelario and Florencia Ramirez, Gregorio and Leonarda Serrano; siblings, Adam Richard Silos, Leonard (Cindy) Serrano, Debra Simants; aunts, Esther Delgadillo, Eva Polanco, Mary Lou Silos, Patricia Thompson, Mariangela Bramen, Antonia Cochran, Phyllis Serrano, Mary “Chicha” Serrano; uncles, Bernabe Silos, Danny silos, John Serrano, Manuel Serrano, Tony Serrano, George Serrano..
