Obituary

On December 2, 2024, David Lawrence Showalter passed away in the comfort of his home with his beloved wife of 56 years by his side.

David was born one of five children to Henry Martin and Thelma May (Myers) Showalter in Kansas City, KS, on November 13, 1948.  In his childhood, David's family moved often to accommodate his father's military career.  They eventually settled in Bellevue, NE, where David graduated from Bellevue High School with the class of 1966.  After completing high school, he went on to attend Conquerors Bible College in Portland, OR.  It was here that he met Sherryl "Jean" Peden, the woman he would eventually marry on July 17, 1968, in Grand Island, NE.  The couple was blessed with a son, David Allen, who they loved dearly but was taken from them in 1973 after he was hit by a car at only 3 years old.  After David Allen's passing, David and Jean had two more children, Steven and Heather.

The family made their home in Grand Island, raising their kids.  David began work as the assistant pastor at the Calvary Apostolic Church where he stayed until they moved to Omaha in 1977.  The Lighthouse UPC became the family's "home away from home" as David was the church's pastor from 1977 to 2023.

David held many accomplishments in his lifetime, one being the District Secretary of the Nebraska UPC, as well as an Honorary (ornery) Board Member later.  He was dedicated to preaching the Word of the Lord but had a sense of humor that was nearly unmatched and sometimes misunderstood.  He became a sign language interpreter to communicate with his deaf parishioners and friends.  He was goofy, fun, and always teasing someone, qualities that were sure enough passed on to his children and grandchildren.  David loved the outdoors, hunting deer and turkey, and fishing.  He enjoyed an outing on his motorcycle and reading a good book, especially a western novel written by Louis L'Amour.

Those that remain to carry on David's feistiness include his wife, Sherryl "Jean" Showalter of North Platte; children, Steven (Angela) Showalter of Plattsmouth, and Heather (Brian) Cox of North Platte; grandkids, Natalie (Eelijah) Clutter of West Virginia, Austin Showalter of Plattsmouth, Jerry, Samuel, and Toby Cox all of North Platte; siblings, Mike (Mary) Showalter, Monte (Dianne) Showalter, and Rebecca Anderson; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Preceding him in death are his parents; son, David Allen; sister, Deanna.
