Obituary

Grace Kamper Thompson Schutte, 97, of North Platte, Nebraska passed away November 30, 2024 at Linden Court, in North Platte.  She was born April 7, 1927 to George and Alma (Hake) Kamper in St. Libory, Nebraska.

Grace graduated from Grand Island Senior High, Grand Island, Nebraska with the class of 1944.  Shortly after graduation, Grace and her cousin took a train to San Diego, California where she joined her sister, working at Consolidated Vultee Aircraft, where she assembled sea planes, as a Riveter.  While in California, she also worked as a Stenographer. She then moved back to Grand Island in 1945, where she worked at Grand Island Air Force Base, continuing her work as a Stenographer.  Grace proudly served  at the Ordinance Plant during WW II.  Grace married Walter "Tommy" W. Thompson on May 10, 1947, in Grand Island.  They moved to North Platte in 1953, where Grace was a homemaker, raising their four children.  She also worked in the office at Washington Elementary School. Tommy passed away in 1981.  Grace later married Rev. Herb Schutte in June of 1987, and humbly fulfilled her role as a Pastor's wife, supporting several congregations.  They lived in Redmond, Oregon for many years until returning to Grand Island, and later to North Platte.  Herb passed away in September of 2005. Grace enjoyed quilting and made many quilts for the Orphan Grain Train, a ministry that her church supports.  Grace will be remembered as a very giving person, kind, loving, gracious and forgiving. She was an active member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Butterfield; son, Richard (Mardell) Thompson; daughters-in-law, Tracy Thompson, Connie Thompson; step-children, Gloria Eki and Rev. Dennis (Sandra) Schutte; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great granddaughter; 4 step-grandchildren;11 step-great-grandchildren, and 1 step-great-great-grandchild.

Grace was preceded in death by her husbands, her sons Jerrold (Jerry) and Timothy; son-in-law, Robert Butterfield, step son-in-law, Doug Eki; her parents; 6 siblings and their spouses, as well as several nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., on Saturday, December 7, 2024 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church with Rev. Daniel Ramsey officiating.  Burial will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery on Monday, December 9, 2024 at 1:OO P.M.  Visitation will be from 9- 4, Friday, December 6, 2024 at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home, who is assisting the family.
