Obituary

Hazel Maurine Qualley Cofer, a dedicated farmer & rancher for more than 66 years, passed away in her family home on December 18, 2024. Born on April 27, 1928, W N River Road in North Platte, NE.  She was the second daughter of Arthur and Hazel Calhoun Qualley.  She graduated with the class of 1945 at NPHS and attended summer sessions in Boulder, CO later receiving her teaching certificate from Kearney State Teachers College. She taught at Platte Valley & several rural schools in Lincoln County, then continued her teaching career in Mitchell, NE after her marriage.

Maurine & Glenn were united in marriage on October 19, 1947 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Platte. In the autumn of 1950, they relocated to Kansas City, MO where Maurine engaged in selling real estate and insurance. March 1, 1956 the family returned to North Platte to embark on their farming & ranching venture. Maurine took on the roles of bookkeeper & animal husbandry for their livestock & horses, in addition to milking, raising chickens & tending garden. Together with Glenn, she helped to sponsor summer bus tours for 4-H, transported horses to their daughters' 4-H horse shows, & traveled across the United States by bus and motorhome, including off-road adventures in the Colorado Mountains. A passionate lover of choral music, Maurine was a dedicated member of the First Lutheran Church Choir from her high school years into adulthood & performed with the Gospel Lites quartet for 35 years, participating in numerous local events & church services in Nebraska & Colorado.

Maurine was a skilled sculptor & painter specializing in Western Art. She received invitations to numerous professional, local & regional exhibitions, where she appreciated the opportunity to showcase her creations & engage with attendees. Her portfolio included several bronze sculptures & a wide variety of oil & water color paintings.

Maurine is survived by her two children, Glenna (Greg) Brissey of Fort Collins, CO & JoAnn Cofer-Ziemski of Grand Island, Nebraska. She also leaves behind four grandchildren: Megan (Jon Sparks) Brissey from Highland, CA, Lauren Brissey from Fort Collins, CO & Cameron & Connor Cofer-Ziemski Grand Island, NE  &  many nieces, nephews, cousins & beloved friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur & Hazel Calhoun Qualley & sisters, Marilyn Qualley Humphrey, Helen Qualley Bishop & her husband of almost 75 years, Glenn Arthur Cofer.

She experienced a remarkable life, embracing every moment to the fullest.

Services are scheduled for 12:00 P.M. on Friday, January 10, 2025, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Platte, followed by interment at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, Nebraska. Pastor Patrick Sipes will officiate the ceremony.

Memorial contributions are recommended to be made to either the First Evangelical Lutheran Church or      St. Jude Children's Hospital.
