Obituary

Mary Lynn Horst 76, of North Platte, NE passed peacefully in her home on May 15th, 2025 after a three year battle with cancer.

Mary Lynn was born and raised by a full and loving family in Champion, NE. After high school, she made her way to Doane College majoring in Education and also met her husband of 50 years, Brian. Following graduation, Mary Lynn & Brian moved to North Platte where their daughter, Laura Lynn, was born.

Mary Lynn was not only known to the North Platte community as an music educator and guidance counselor at Adams Middle School and North Platte High School, but also as a musician and dedicated volunteer for many organizations. As a family, the Horsts performed in over 30 productions at North Platte Community Playhouse with Brian and Laura Lynn onstage and Mary Lynn sharing her gifts on the piano with the pit orchestra. She directed the girl's quintet, Forte, the men's quartet, Four-in-a-Chord, and the Canteen Cabaret Singers. She also shared her musical talents with Heartland Singers and the Methodist Church Choir.

She served her community by volunteering with RDAP, PEO, North Platte Community Concert Association and the Mid Nebraska Community Foundation. She served her church for over 50 years through numerous committees, volunteering in the office, and playing the piano for the weekly services.

Mary Lynn was a committed educator retiring not once, but twice from her work as a Guidance Counselor at North Platte High School. Her caring nature and generous spirit touched hundreds of students and fellow educators over the years.

Mary Lynn was preceded in death by her parents, Irvin & Garneta Bauerle, her in-laws Ivan & Delores Horst, her brother-in-law Jim Lindau, and her loving husband Brian Horst.

She is survived by her daughter Laura Lynn, siblings Marcia Lindau, Marla (Terry) Hill, Mike (Jill) Bauerle, Bill (Marcia) Bauerle, Margaret (Jeff) Nelson, her in-laws Jean (Dale) Christensen, Joyce (Larry) Raabe, Lori (David) Kohler, and over 20 nephews and nieces.

Services will be held on Saturday, May 24th at 11:00 am at the First United Methodist Church in North Platte.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to First United Methodist Church, North Platte Community Playhouse, Callaghan Cancer Center, and the Rape & Domestic Abuse Program.
