July 25, 1939 – June 30, 2025
Myron Chester "Mike" Barner, 85, of North Platte passed away June 30, 2025 at his home. He was born the seventh of eight children on July 25, 1939 to Chester and Edith (Utterback) Barner in Stapleton.
Mike grew up in Stapleton and attended Baker Rural School and Stapleton Public School. He graduated from Stapleton High School with the class of 1958. Mike also attended McCook Community College. Mike served in the United States Navy from 1961-1964 aboard the USS Coral Sea. He married Janice L. Wever on December 12, 1965 at First Christian Church in North Platte. After many years as a conductor for the Union Pacific Railroad, Mike retired in 2001. With a true servant's heart, Mike volunteered in a variety of ways for The Salvation Army for over 30 years.
Survivors include wife, Janice "Jan" L. Barner of North Platte; daughters, Julie (Ryan) Smith of Sidney, Lisa (Brandon) Cool of Kearney; grandchildren, McKade Smith, Drennan, Haikan, and Sivney Cool; brother, Byron (Elaine) Barner of Lincoln; brother-in-law, Jim Wever; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Deb and Neill Thompson; bonus family, Kenny, Natalie, Kord, and Neela Furrow; numerous other nieces, nephews, family members and friends.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Edith Barner; In-laws, Jim and Marie Wever; and other family members.
Memorials are suggested to The Salvation Army Food Pantry-North Platte, KJLT, or Bethel Evangelical Free Church. Online condolences may be shared at www.adamsswanson.com.
Burial will be held 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, July 8, 2025 at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell. Services will follow the burial at 11:30 A.M. at Bethel Evangelical Free Church with Pastor Geoff Safford and Pastor Dave Logsdon officiating. Visitation will be held noon-7:00 P.M., Monday, July 7, 2025 at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.
