IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Rose T.
Jurado
December 21, 1930 – June 18, 2025
Rose T. Jurado, 94, of North Platte, passed away peacefully on the early morning of June 18, 2025 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center.
She was born Rosalia Thomasa Contreras on December 21, 1930, in Chanute, Kansas to Cosme and Concha "Pearl" (Gonzales) Contreras, and was the 8th child out of 12, but was the oldest daughter and the longest surviving sibling.
Rose lived in Chanute, Kansas in her younger childhood, but later moved with her family to various areas such as California and Colorado before finally ending up in Nebraska between Hershey and North Platte. When her father Cosme died of emphysema, she dropped out of 8th grade, helping her mother Pearl take care of their very large family. She waitressed for various restaurants in North Platte such as Tucker's Cafe, The Pawnee Hotel, The Depot, and Rogers Fine Foods. Around 1950, Rose met her future husband, Bonifacio "Bonny" Jurado, who was settling in North Platte after graduating from the Kansas City School of Watchmaking, he began working for Hoover's Jewelry. They were married July 31, 1950, and thereafter had their first daughter Katherine Ann in 1954, followed by Linda Christine in 1960, Michael Gerard in 1962, and Annette Eldean in 1965. In 1964, Rose and Bonny had purchased Hoover's Jewelers from Herb and Bunny Hoover, and made it the family business where all their children worked at from a young age. In fact, two of the children, Linda and Michael, went on to follow in their father's footsteps and took over two of four total stores bearing the Hoover's Jewelry name.
During the years of their childhood, all children attended Catholic grade school at McDaid Elementary, and then onto high school at St. Patrick's Jr/Sr High School. Rose and Bonny were very active members of the St. Patrick's Parish, and Rose took part in the Alter Society, The Catholic Daughters, The Divine Chaplet Rosary Club, and eventually Widows without Spouses after Bonny had passed away in 2009. She was a wonderful homemaker, cook and mother to her children, but also found time to assist her husband Bonny at Hoover's Jewelers once the kids were old enough and at St. Pat's. Both of them did many activities together as well as working at Hoover's, like dancing on the weekends at Joe's Supper Club in their early marriage, and later being a part of the Winter Dance Club with several St. Patrick's couples. They enjoyed this into later years, which kept them young and fun to be around. They also attended many jewelry conventions in places like Denver, Chicago, and Las Vegas, and even an overseas trip to Antwerp, Belgium which is known as the Diamond Capital of the World.
After Bonny's passing in 2009, Rose spent all her years thereafter living independently on her own, and thoroughly enjoyed her children, grandchildren, and the many many friends of North Platte that were truly her reason for living there for so long! Her Mexican food was one of a kind, especially her pork chili, refried beans, and sopa, which will be greatly missed. She was not a stranger to many, and she was one of the best prayer warriors around. Her faith in God was absolutely instilled in her values with a warm and generous heart. She was the BEST MOM ever, up until the very day she passed, and her immediate family as well as extended family along with the NP community will greatly miss her.
Rose is survived by her four children: Kathy (Kim) Fanning of Turon, KS, Linda (Randy) Griffiths of Kearney, NE, Mike (Judy) Jurado of Lincoln, NE, and Annette (Jim) Astuto of La Vista, NE. Her grandchildren: Nick (Alisha) Fanning of Ogallala, NE, Cameron Griffiths of Kearney, NE, Dawson Jurado of Omaha, NE, Seth DePriter of La Vista, NE, and Jake Astuto of La Vista, NE. She also has five great-grandchildren: Hayden, Saffron, Deegan, Maddie, and Gaia, all of Ogallala, NE.
She was preceded in death by her spouse of 59 years, Bonny; both her parents Cosme and Pearl Contreras; her brothers: Benny, Andrew, Raymond, Felix, Gabriel, John, Philip, and Joe; her sisters: Mary, Lucy, and Michela.
