Obituary

Verlon A. Hopkins, age 90, of North Platte passed away February 28, 2013 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center. He was born April 22, 1922 in Stapleton, NE to Benjamin and Gertrude Fifield Hopkins.
Verlon graduated from Baker Rural High School in Stapleton. In 1943, he married Elsie Andre. He farmed and ranched for many years around Stapleton. He worked for the Wells family for many years before moving to North Platte to work at a gas station.
Verlon helped build I-80 interstate for Missouri Valley Construction Company, mixing the concrete from North Platte to Big Springs. He joined the Nebraska Department of Roads in 1970, retiring in 1990. At that time, he and Elsie wintered in Yuma, Arizona. He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church, and for 17 years he and Elsie officiated Sunday morning services at the North Platte Care Center.
He enjoyed playing pool, going to lunch at the North Platte Senior Center, and calling bingo there.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia (Buster) Fear of North Platte; sister, Edna Sherwood of North Carolina; brother, LeRoy Hopkins of Oregon; granddaughters, Brenda (Keith) Larabee of Stuart, NE, Sheila (Ed) Albright of Pierre, SD and Becky (Jeff) Barner of North Platte; 6 great-grandchildren; and brothers-in-law, Melvin Andre of Callaway, Cliff (Claire) Andre of CO and John (Peggy) Andre of CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Elsie; an infant brother; brother, Eugene Hopkins; sister-in-law, Helen Hopkins; and brother-in-law, Bill Sherwood.
Memorials may be made to the First Assembly of God Church and online condolences may be shared at www.adamsswanson.com.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 2, 2013 at First Assembly of God with the Reverends Gary Goodwin and Harun Gatobu officiating. Burial will follow at Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from noon until 9:00 p.m. today at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements.
